Discussing Transmission of COVID-19 During Close Contact with Hydrogen Peroxide Gel: Perio Gel®

Duane C. Keller, DMD talks about how to protect your team and your patients in this difficult time.
How is it transferred?
According to the presentation, the data suggests the epithelial cells of the salivary gland ducts are early target cells for Co-V-2.
When the virus attaches, it’s RNA is released into the host cell. Then the host cell takes over production and replication. The RNA goes into the epithelial cells, epidermis, dermis, then saliva and goes everywhere after that. These cells go out and infect other cells. You end up with millions of copies of the virus that are ready to be dispersed by coughing, saliva and speech
If you can take away the target, you may be able to deflect some of the disease!
All patients who do not test right before you come in contact with them can be assumed to have an unknown COVID status. Therefore, you must try to reduce the viral load to try to reduce transmission.
Hydrogen Peroxide disrupts the cell membrane of the virus on contact. The research shows it’s antiviral, it changes the RNA pattern of the SARS Co-V-1 and they assume Co-V-2 since they are very similar.
The American Dental Association recommends gargling with hydrogen peroxide 1.5% to reduce the salivary load of the virus.
The problem w/gargling is that it’s not there long enough to control the virus. Why? The problem with liquid hydrogen peroxide is that it has a “burst” effect. When H202 runs into the virus or bacteria, it immediately releases all of its material, so it is only around for 1-2 minutes.
We should keep the hydrogen peroxide in contact longer. What about using a gel?
Hydrogen Peroxide Gel: Periogel®
Periogel would be more than a “burst” and can stay around longer; it will release 1.7% H202 for over 15 minutes.
So you’ll have a greater longevity than liquid hydrogen peroxide.
Perio Gel®, an OTC, available through Town & Country Compounding, is product that contains 1.7% Hydrogen Peroxide. Available at T&C
*The FDA clears the use of H202 for 14 days. Longer use requires professional supervision.
