The Hormone Gal: Jari Becker, RPh
Director of Women’s Health and pharmacist Jari Becker, RPh gives her take on women’s health, offers her expertise, and invites you to join upcoming events. As the main speaker at Town & Country Compounding’s Women, Wellness & Wine events, she has connected women with answers about hormone imbalances
Why are you referred to as the “Hormone Gal” at Town & Country Compounding Pharmacy?
I consider women’s health and hormones my passion. As a pharmacist, I understand hormone imbalances and related symptoms that occur as women approach menopause. And, as a female, I can relate and empathize with women about how disruptive symptoms can be. I enjoy sharing my knowledge about nutritional supplements, stress management, lifestyle changes, and bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), to help women maintain a good quality of life as they reach their menopausal years. I find it interesting and rewarding to discuss bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) dosing and symptom management with practitioners to help solve difficult patient problems.
What are some common questions you receive about women’s health?
Questions vary with each event but the most common are weight gain, sleep problems, irregular bleeding, and hot flashes and/or night sweats. I receive quite a few questions related to vaginal health; painful intercourse, vaginal dryness, and lack of libido. We discuss all of these and more during our Women, Wine, and Wellness Events.
What is a common misconception about menopausal symptoms?
I I think so many women are taught that menopause is only about losing your period or managing a few symptoms, but it’s really so much more than that. The list of symptoms vary but I try to educate women to understand that menopause is a decline in hormones and it affects their overall health from head to toe.
What are some other interesting topics that come up in the group at your Women, Wellness & Wine events?
We’ve covered a wide range of topics, including diet, sleep cycles, exercise, stress management, and the role of supplements. Often, the conversation is shaped by the women in the room—their symptoms, health goals, and personal experiences guide where the discussion goes. Some nights we dive deep into hormone health, other times we focus on lifestyle changes that support energy, mood, and overall well-being. No two sessions are ever the same, which is what keeps them engaging and meaningful.
As the main speaker at Town & Country Compounding’s Women, Wellness & Wine events, what’s it all about?
Several times a year from September through June, we host an in-person Women, Wellness & Wine event at our Ramsey, NJ pharmacy from 6:30–8:30 pm. These relaxed, interactive sessions are a safe space to discuss women’s health topics like hormone replacement, libido, and hot flashes—no lectures, just real conversations. Practitioners often join in too! Unable to attend one of our sessions, gather a few friends and we will bring the event to you!
Why is Managing Menopause so Difficult?
Menopause isn’t just about one hormone changing. It’s a complex shift in your body’s entire hormonal system. Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone can rise and fall unpredictably, triggering a wide range of physical and emotional changes. In the 5– 10 years leading up to menopause (perimenopause), these fluctuations can make it hard to know which symptoms are linked to which changes, or when they’ll happen. Other hormones—like DHEA, cortisol, and thyroid—also play a role, and when their levels shift, they can add to the symptoms you’re experiencing.
Every woman’s menopause journey is unique. Some women move through this stage of life with only a few mild symptoms, while others experience many symptoms that linger for years. This wide range of experiences makes menopause challenging to recognize and manage—for both women and their healthcare providers. Early signs aren’t always obvious—headaches, joint pain, mood changes, or sleep disruptions may be mistaken for stress, aging, or other health issues. Without realizing these could be signs of perimenopause, women may delay seeking help, prolonging discomfort and missing the opportunity to address hormone changes early.
Overlapping Symptoms. Many menopause symptoms—like fatigue, brain fog, weight changes, or mood shifts—can also be caused by other health conditions. This overlap can make it difficult for healthcare providers to pinpoint whether hormones are the main culprit. That’s why a holistic approach is so important. Managing menopause and hormonal imbalances means looking at the full picture, including lifestyle, diet, physical activity or exercise, stress levels, and mental health. While making comprehensive lifestyle changes can feel overwhelming, even small,
consistent steps can make a big difference in how you feel.
Changing Guideline & Mixed Opinions. Medical guidelines for managing menopause and hormone imbalances have evolved over time, and opinions among healthcare providers can differ widely. These differences often shape the treatment options women are offered—or not offered. Some providers avoid hormone therapy altogether, while others take a proactive approach when hormone levels are low or out of balance. This mixed messaging can leave women feeling uncertain about where to turn, especially when symptoms are disrupting daily life. No single therapy works equally well for everyone. Hormone replacement therapy offers potential benefits but also carries risks for some that should be carefully weighed. Lifestyle choices, nutrition, and targeted supplements can also influence how a woman feels when hormones decline or become imbalanced. The key is finding an individualized approach that
supports both symptom relief and long-term health.
Stigma & Taboos. In some friend groups, women in their 40s and 50s may share stories about hot flashes, low libido, or weight changes—but this kind of open conversation isn’t the norm in many cultures. In many communities, menopause and other hormone-related concerns are still considered sensitive, even taboo, topics. This silence can make women feel isolated and prevent them from getting the help they need. It’s time to change that. Menopause is a natural stage of life, not something to whisper about—and every woman deserves to have her experience heard, understood, and respected.

Test your hormone levels with a simple at-home saliva test kit!
Steroid hormones in the bloodstream are 95-99% bound to carrier proteins, and in this form are unavailable to target tissues. Saliva testing measures the amount of hormone available to target tissues – the bioavailable amount. For this reason, saliva testing better relates to specific symptoms of excess or deficiency, and is a good option for monitoring hormone therapy.

Why Choose Saliva Testing?
You don’t have an upcoming doctor’s appointment but want insight into your hormone levels now.
Your recent blood (serum) test looked “normal, ” yet you’re still experiencing symptoms.
It’s been three to six months since your last test, and you’d like to recheck your levels after changes in lifestyle, exercise, supplements, or hormone therapy.
