Low-Dose Oral Minoxidil (LDOM):
A New and Exciting Formulation for Addressing Hair Loss
Hair loss is a common concern that can significantly affect self-esteem and well-being. It can occur in both women and men due to genetics, autoimmune disorders, hormonal fluctuations , medications, stress, or other underlying conditions.
A new expert consensus released on November 20, 2024 provides valuable guidance on prescribing Low Dose Oral Minoxidil (LDOM) for hair loss.
However, this document emphasizes that LDOM is not commercially available in the low doses typically required. Instead, it must be prepared through a licensed compounding pharmacy to ensure safe, customized dosing.
Low-dose oral minoxidil vs. topical minoxidil
Low-dose oral Minoxidil (LDOM) has gained increasing interest for its ability to improve hair thickness and volume.
Unlike topical minoxidil, which requires twice-daily scalp application, oral minoxidil offers a convenient alternative that avoids irritation, messiness, and compliance challenges.

Compounded dosing ranges for LDOM
Common compounded doses range from 0.25 mg to 2.5 mg per capsule, allowing prescribers to tailor therapy to each patient.
Typical dosing varies by gender:
- Women: 0.25 mg – 2.5 mg daily
- Men: 1.25 mg – 5 mg daily
Prescribers often begin with lower doses and adjust gradually based on response.
Important note for patients
Patients are not advised to cut higher-dose tablets. Splitting can lead to inaccurate dosing and unsafe self-titration. Low-dose formulations should be professionally compounded.
The importance of dermatologists working with high-quality compounding pharmacies
Dermatologists play a key role in prescribing LDOM safely and effectively. Working with a reputable compounding pharmacy ensures patients receive the correct formulation and dosage.
Compounding also allows minoxidil to be combined with supportive therapies such as finasteride or biotin in a single capsule.
