What is a compounded medication?

Compounding is the creation of a pharmaceutical preparation-a drug-by a licensed pharmacist to meet the unique needs of an individual patient (either human or animal) when a commercially available drug does not meet those needs.

Why do I have to get my medication at a compounding pharmacy instead of my regular pharmacy? Why can't they make it?

You’ve been prescribed a compounded medication—a custom-made formula tailored specifically to your needs. Unlike traditional retail pharmacies, which primarily dispense commercially available medications, compounding pharmacies like ours specialize in preparing these customized treatments.

Compounding requires specialized equipment, training, and expertise. Most retail pharmacies can only prepare the most basic compounds, if any at all. At Town & Country Compounding, compounding is all we do—our team is highly trained in the art and science of personalized medication.

Think of it like seeing a medical specialist rather than a general practitioner. Your regular pharmacy is excellent for standard medications, but for complex or customized prescriptions, a compounding pharmacy is the expert prescriber.

Do you take insurance?

We do not bill insurance directly for compounded medications. Over time, we’ve found that most insurance plans do not cover compounded prescriptions—even when submitted—resulting in frequent denials. In the rare cases when coverage was approved, the required copay often exceeded our standard cash price, which we feel is unfair to patients.

While some compounding pharmacies may appear to accept insurance, patients are often informed later that the prescription was rejected and end up paying the cash price regardless.

To support our patients, we’re happy to provide Universal Claim Forms that can be submitted to insurance companies for possible reimbursement.

How long does it take to get my compounded prescription?

Compounded prescriptions are made specifically for each patient and are scheduled once payment is received. Most prescriptions are processed within 24–48 hours and are ready for pickup or shipping within that time, provided we receive both the prescription and payment Monday through Thursday. Please note we are closed on weekends and do not ship on Saturdays or Sundays. Once payment is received, we’ll provide an estimated timeframe for your prescription.

What kind of fillers do you use for compounded capsules?

Our most commonly used filler is Microcrystalline Cellulose (Avicel). Depending on the patient’s needs and the formulation, we may also use Ascorbic Acid, Calcium Carbonate, Sodium Bicarbonate, or Lactose.

If you have sensitivities or preferences, we can customize the filler to best suit your individual needs.

Can you add a flavor to a bitter tasting medication?

Absolutely! We offer a wide variety of flavors to help mask the bitterness of medications for both human and veterinary patients. Be sure to ask us about all the flavor options available!

Do you compound medications for pets?

Yes, we frequently compound custom medications for pets. Commercial products don’t always provide the right strengths, flavors, or dosage forms needed to suit different breeds and individual pet preferences.

Can I return my medications?

Federal regulations prohibit the return of any prescriptions that have been dispensed.

Do you take FSA or HSA cards?

Yes, we do accept FSA and HSA cards. However, we recommend keeping a second card on file to cover any delivery fees, if applicable.

Can you contact my doctor if I am out of refills?

Yes, we can assist with that! Please provide your prescription number (Rx#) along with your doctor’s phone number. You can also call or text us directly at 201-447-2020, or submit a refill request through our online form.

Who can I talk to if I have any questions about my prescription?

If you have any questions about your prescription, you can call or text us at 201-447-2020.

Alternatively, you may submit a HIPAA-compliant inquiry through our secure online form.

Why do you need my payment before you start to compound my prescription?

We require payment upfront because your prescription is specially customized just for you. Compounding takes skill, time, and resources, so we need confirmation that you’re committed before we begin preparing it.

Can you compound for allergy, dietary or religious needs?

Yes, we accommodate a wide range of requirements, including lactose-free, dye-free, pork-free, vegetarian capsules, gluten-free, sugar-free, and Kosher options. We are also transitioning to using vegetarian capsules for all formulations moving forward.

Are compounded prescriptions expensive?

The cost varies depending on the specific prescription, ingredient prices, and the time needed to compound it. We strive to offer fair and transparent pricing for every customized medication.

How can I order a refill?

You can submit a refill request using our online form or call/text us at 201-447-2020. When texting, please include your prescription number for faster processing.
