Acute Pain vs. Chronic Pain
Pain is perceived differently by everyone. Pain can be short term, long term, severe, or mild, but whatever type of pain you are living with, it can negatively affect your quality of life.
Pain that has a specific cause that may be addressed and lasts less than 6 months is referred to as acute pain. It can be sudden and sharp. Examples of acute pain could be sports injuries such as a broken leg or pulled muscle. Minor cuts, scrapes, or burns also cause acute pain. Even the extreme pain during childbirth or immediately after surgery is considered acute pain since it goes away when the underlying cause has stopped or is cured.
Chronic pain is more challenging and persists for 3 to 6 months and often longer. It affects more than 1.5 billion people worldwide and can often be debilitating. Examples of chronic pain are headaches, arthritis, cancer, nerve pain, back pain, neck pain, and fibromyalgia. This type of prolonged pain is a never-ending presence, and often leads to depression and anxiety.
Patients often try various medications for pain that may not be successful for various reasons.
Challenges with Over-the-Counter (OTC) Pain Medications
Common oral medications prescribed for the management of acute or chronic pain include NSAIDs, acetaminophen, narcotics, and muscle relaxants and, for nerve pain: antidepressants and anticonvulsants, such as gabapentin.
