Acute Pain vs. Chronic Pain

Pain is perceived differently by everyone. Pain can be short term, long term, severe, or mild, but whatever type of pain you are living with, it can negatively affect your quality of life.

Pain that has a specific cause that may be addressed and lasts less than 6 months is referred to as acute pain. It can be sudden and sharp.

Examples of acute pain could be sports injuries such as a broken leg or pulled muscle. Minor cuts, scrapes, or burns also cause acute pain.

Even the extreme pain during childbirth or immediately after surgery is considered acute pain since it goes away when the underlying cause of the pain has stopped or is cured.

Chronic pain is more challenging and persists for 3 to 6 months and often longer. It affects more than 1.5 billion people worldwide and can often be debilitating.

Examples of chronic pain are headachesarthritis, cancer, nerve pain, back pain, neck pain, and fibromyalgia. This type of prolonged pain is a never-ending presence, and often leads to depression and anxiety.

Patients often try various medications for pain that may not be successful for various reasons.

Challenges with Over-the-Counter (OTC) Pain Medications

Common oral medications prescribed for the management of acute or chronic pain include NSAIDs, acetaminophen, narcotics, and muscle relaxants and, for nerve pain: antidepressants and anticonvulsants, such as gabapentin.

While these oral medications may help some more than others, there are challenges associated with long-term use of these medications:

  • Addiction, abuse
  • Drowsiness, dizziness
  • Nausea
  • May not relieve the patient’s pain
  • Hard to swallow multiple pills or capsules
  • Side effects that inhibit ability to function “normally”
  • Various types of pain meds are often required, multiple times per day — can be too overwhelming for the patient
  • Serious gastrointestinal side effects have been associated with long-term NSAID (ibuprofen, etc.) use
    • They have been associated with ulcer rates of 10 to 30%. An estimated 100,000 patients are hospitalized annually in the US as a result of NSAID-related GI complications.
