Addressing challenges
related to menopause

Recently, the author of an informative, entertaining (yet lengthy) article in the NY Times described several menopausal challenges that her friends faced.

At Town & Country Compounding, we hear similar challenges all too often. Women are feeling miserable due to the inability to control their symptoms of perimenopause or menopause. They do not feel heard, that their misery doesn’t matter. It does!

“The symptoms friends experienced were varied and intrusive. Some lost hours of sleep every night, disruptions that chipped away at their mood, their energy, the vast resources of goodwill that it takes to parent and to partner. One friend endured weeklong stretches of such heavy menstrual bleeding that she had to miss work. Another friend was plagued by as many as ten hot flashes a day; a third was so troubled by her flights of anger. Another felt a pervasive dryness in her skin, nails, throat, and eyes — as if she were slowly calcifying.”

After hearing about her friends’ experiences, the author decided that our culture must have a high tolerance for women’s suffering. Symptoms endured during menopause are often not even considered, by many practitioners, to be significant enough to warrant discussions about treatment options.

“Imagine that some significant portion of the male population started regularly waking in the middle of the night drenched in sweat, a problem that endured for several years. Imagine those men stumbled to work, exhausted, their morale low, frequently tearing off their jackets or hoodies during meetings and excusing themselves to gulp for air by a window. Imagine that many of them suddenly found sex to be painful, that they were newly prone to urinary tract infections, with their penises becoming dry and irritable, even showing signs of what their doctors called “atrophy.” Imagine that many of their doctors had received little to no training on how to manage these symptoms — and when the subject arose, sometimes reassured their patients that this process was natural, as if that should be consolation enough.”
