Gum Disease Can Lead to Bigger Health Complications

Perio Gel®, an Over-The-Counter Treatment that contains 1.7% Hydrogen Peroxide (highly effective at killing infectious bacteria and reducing inflammation in the gums), is available through Town & Country Compounding.
*The FDA clears the use of H202 for 14 days. Longer use requires professional supervision.
Chronic bad breath? Bleeding gums? This could mean chronic diseases down the road.
Perio Gel® (Hydrogen Peroxide 1.7% OTC Dental Gel) is an option to try.
Do your gums look inflamed or ever bleed when you floss? Do you have bad breath that does not go away even though you brush often? Chronic halitosis? According to a study published in 2018, almost half of adults in America have gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis), which equates to potentially 65 million adult Americans with the problem.
Infections in the gums may provide an entryway for bacteria to enter the body and contribute to other health problems.
Your Immune System
Did you know that gum health affects your immune system? Bacteria can spread to other parts of the body. There has been research showing connections between gum disease inflammation, and diseases such as:
- Heart Disease
- Blood Clots and Strokes
- Respiratory Disease
- Type 2 Diabetes
- Alzheimer’s Disease
“What begin as bacteria on the teeth form colonies and slide between the surfaces and into the spaces between the teeth and gums known as periodontal pockets.
These pockets can quickly become breeding grounds for the bacteria and form communities called biofilms.”

Managing Inflammation During COVID-19
Have you been to the dentist lately? Did they ask you to swish something in your mouth before seeing you? There are various solutions being used and Perio Gel is one of them.
Reducing the Risk of Respiratory Viral Transmission in Close Contact Procedures
The second wave of COVID is here and many are still uneasy about how to continue normal activities safely. Respiratory transmission is an ongoing concern, and any practitioner who comes in close contact with patients must think about protecting not only the patient, but also themselves and then the subsequent patients they will see. Viral particles that one patient sheds may easily be transmitted to the next patient if proper precautions are not taken.
What This Means for Practitioners
Practitioners who work more closely with areas of potential mucosal or aerosol contact are clearly at a greater risk and have thought about how to reduce transmission. In addition to dentists, several types of practitioners who perform procedures on the respiratory tract and the upper part of the digestive tract have reached out for information.
Some of hydrogen peroxide’s actions on the virus:
- Disrupts the viral envelope
- Reduces the viral ability to replicate
- Inactivates the enzymes in the virus
- Reduces the ability of the virus to bind to the cell
Hydrogen Peroxide also kills coronaviruses on contact and rinsing or brushing with Perio Gel may help reduce the viral load in saliva and the risk of oral transmission. For this reason, dentists may ask you to pretreat with a peroxide product before coming to the dental office. Read on for additional information >>

* The American Dental Association recommends gargling with hydrogen peroxide 1.5% to reduce the salivary load of the virus.
A potential problem with just gargling is that it may not be in contact with the oral cavity long enough.
Why? Liquid hydrogen peroxide has a “burst” effect. When H202 runs into the virus or bacteria, it immediately releases all of its material, so it is only around for 1–2 minutes.
Consider keeping the hydrogen peroxide in contact with the mouth longer. What about using a gel?
