Why Stimate® Nasal Spray was Recalled
Ferring Pharmaceuticals, the owners and manufacturers of Stimate® Nasal Spray, issued a retail-level recall of the product after routine testing showed that some of the vials proved to be out of specification.
Some lots were found to be “superpotent” or having a higher concentration of desmopressin. The root cause is still under investigation, and the disruption and unavailability of supply is expected to continue until at least mid-to-late 2021.
“Ferring has issued a voluntary retail level recall of Stimate. We are working closely with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) on the recall.”

What is Desmopressin?
Desmopressin is used in people with hemophilia A and type 1 Von Willebrand’s Disease (VWD) to regulate bleeding that may be caused by trauma or surgery. VWD is a clotting disorder in which a protein in the blood that helps with clotting, Von Willebrand Factor (VWF), is too low. Type 1 VWD is the mildest and the most common form. A patient with VWD may also have lower than normal levels of the clotting protein factor VIII. Hemophilia Type A is characterized by normal VWF levels but low levels or an absence of factor V.
The use of desmopressin acetate will also stop bleeding in patients with episodes of spontaneous or trauma-induced injuries such as hemarthroses, intramuscular hematomas, and mucosal bleeding.
