Scream Cream, Yell Gel, and Topical Testosterone for Women’s Sexual Health

“No honey, I have a headache.” Remember hearing that jokingly in your younger years? It can become truth and is a common complaint among perimenopausal and menopausal women (or women with hormonal imbalances), but with more “true” symptoms than just a headache.

Lack of sexual desire, inability to have an orgasm, vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, moodiness, hot flashes, lack of quality sleep, busy life, and so on can all affect females — leading to female sexual arousal disorder or female sexual dysfunction.

Do you suffer from any of these issues?

We constantly hear from women that they just don’t feel sexual desire, and they worry about pleasing (or not pleasing) their partner. It can be a cycle that continues over time that may lead to problems in relationships.

Solutions to Loss in Interest in Sex

If you want to improve desire or have more interest in sex, what can you do?

Hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) is also referred to as female sexual interest or female sexual arousal disorder and is a sexual dysfunction that is characterized by low sex drive in women.

If this sounds like you, you are not alone. At Town & Country Compounding we can work with you and your doctor to come up with a formulation that may help you.

According to Dare Bioscience, a company that is conducting clinical trials for a topical arousal cream, research suggests that about 10 million women in the U.S. (ages 21–60) report experiencing symptoms of low or no sexual arousal and have sought help with this condition.

Hormonal Alternatives to Sexual Desire Disorder

Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) affects around 32% of women in perimenopausal/menopausal years. In some patients, testosterone can be effective at improving sexual well-being. The possible benefits of testosterone may be improved sexual desire, arousal and orgasm.

Desire Fades Over Time

As women go through menopause, hormone levels change a lot and will often fluctuate from month to month. According to a study that measured sexual desire in women, those who were in the late menopause transition stage and those with higher perceived stress and social responsibilities reported a significant decrease in sexual desire.

Also, those who had symptoms such as sleep disturbances, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, mood disturbances, and anxiety reported significantly lower sexual desire.

According to Dare Bioscience, a company that is conducting clinical trials for a topical arousal cream, research suggests that about 10 million women in the U.S. (ages 21–60) report experiencing symptoms of low or no sexual arousal and have sought help with this condition.

“Often for women, genital, physical arousal precedes the psychological experience of desire, whereas in men, desire precedes arousal.” Read More >>

Other studies confirm that the desire for sex tends to fade over time while in long-term relationships. For women, however, the loss is much more noted than for men, perhaps because testosterone can shield men against things that more emotionally affect women, such as stress, mood, busy life schedules, and exhaustion.

Nan Wise, a certified sex therapist and scientist at Rutgers University says that “a loss of spontaneous sexual desire reflects many women feeling overloaded.

Compounded Topical Testosterone in a Cream or Gel

Testosterone supplementation in women can offer an approach that may significantly improve their sexual and emotional well-being.

There is no commercially available testosterone approved for women. There are patches and gels for men but not for women.

With a prescription, Town & Country Compounding can make a topical testosterone gel or cream in strengths appropriate for women. The prescription can be adjusted based upon the patients’ response. We work with you and your doctor to find what is right for you. If the cream or gel is to be applied vaginally, it will not contain alcohol (unlike the commercially available gel made for men).

Vaginal Thinning (Atrophy) and Dryness

Vaginal atrophy or vaginal thinning often goes hand in hand with vaginal dryness (lack of lubrication), painful intercourse, and decreased arousal.

Less estrogen causes the vaginal tissue to become dry, thinner than it was before. There are fewer vaginal secretions, creating less lubrication. The vaginal pH also tends to increase, leaving the area more prone to yeast or bacterial infections, and UTI’s are commonly seen during this phase of life.

Lower amounts of estrogen can also cause a decrease in blood supply to the vagina as well as lead to hot flashes and night sweats, which can drain your energy and reduce your desire for sex as a result. Also, the clitoris becomes less sensitive, possibly due to reduced estrogen levels and changes in the vascular and nervous systems.

Town & Country Compounding often gets requests from prescribers to compound things such as:
  • Estriol Vaginal Cream
  • Estradiol Vaginal Cream (*Propylene Glycol Free*)

What’s Not In Uberlube

Parabens

Parabens are common preservatives often added to cosmetics Although unlikely to pose any serious medical risk, most women opt for pure, natural products without parabens.

Sodium Laurel Sulfate

SLS causes lathery foaminess in personal washes, shampoos, and bubble bath. Can be harsh towards the vaginal and vulvar area and disrupt the natural moisture.

Glycerin

Glycerin is widely used in medical, pharmaceutical, and personal care products and often added to promote lubrication and improve texture. In others, however, it can cause dryness. Some women note that this predisposes to an imbalance of the vagina and makes it easier to get yeast infections.

Additives

Fragrances, dyes, colors, flavors, warming agents, bactericides, and spermicides all can potentially be harmful to the delicate vulvar tissues. Women with sensitive skin and or menopausal changes in their vaginal and vulvar area should tread cautiously.

Have You Had Your Hormone Levels Measured?

Several studies suggest that estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) and use of hormone replacement therapy may have an effect on sexual desire.

We always hear about “Low T” for men, but women can have it too. Although testosterone prescriptions for women are not commercially available at “big box” chain pharmacies, they can be compounded and customized into topical creams or gel forms in the dose that you need by a compounding pharmacy.
